Setting up the Kit
After you have re hydrated and applied the top soil loosely onto the compost. It is important to keep an eye on your kit and once the white mycelium (completely normal and is not mould) is just showing through, the lid MUST be then removed for the rest of the process, do NOT leave it on or the mushrooms cannot grow.
What is the whiteness growing on my kit?
This is just mushroom mycelium, this appears as a grey / white mould and is quite normal. It is the growth that eventually feeds the mushrooms as they grow. DO NOT let the mcyelium cover the whole surface before taking away the lid.
once growing, When should i remove the loose lid?
The top lid should loosely rest on top of the side flaps for 8 days. You will NOT need to water the kit during this time, then remove the lid for the rest of the process.

If overgrown, this page can help rectify this
Watering guidelines
It is essential to keep the top inch of the kit moist, the top soil should remain dark black in color. Typically spraying twice daily, it is important to do this evenly, the harder to reach corners also need to be kept moist. Light brown patches / speckles on the topsoil would indicate it is getting too dry.

If unsure, this page will be relevant
How to pick
Whilst supporting surrounding mushrooms, hold the mushroom gently at the top and gently twist and pull to remove the whole mushroom, including the root. Cut cleanly at the stem and discard the root.
When to pick
You can pick the mushrooms at the size you want them. To grow bigger, flat mushrooms you will have to create space for them to grow into by removing the smaller, surrounding mushrooms.

My Holes are ready cut, is this normal?
As this is a ready growing kit, your kits should already have their growing holes cut with an "X" Please check this and if necessary, without any issues, you will be able to add your own "X" into the black plastic.
Should i expose the compost through the holes?
No, in order for the mushrooms to colonize the compost needs to be protected from the elements, please ensure the "X" is folded over and protecting the compost rather than having it open.
MY Oyster Mushrooms HAVE ONLY GROWN OUT OF TWO HOLES?
Your Oyster Mushrooms, by nature can grow out of the holes at different times. Often one or two holes will start growing before the third. Keep spraying all holes.
This page can help rectify this.
Watering Guidelines
Spray into each hole with regular water with a spray bottle, 2-3 times per day. Keep spraying the growths and as they develop, also the mushrooms at the same frequency above.
HOW /  WHEN TO PICK
Pick by slicing the whole clump, as close to the box as possible. Pick the mushrooms once fully developed but do not let to over grow and flatten out.
What is the Whiteness dropping from the mushrooms onto the box?
If you see white "dust" coming from the mushrooms, it means they’re dropping their spores. This means you’ve left them slightly too long before harvesting, worry not, they are still good to eat, but should be picked urgently.
Cooking Tips
Three favourite uses for your oyster mushrooms are omelettes, risottos and sitr fries. Use alone, or mix with other mushroom varieties. Enjoy!

Shiitake Mushroom Kits

What is included within the kits?
Each kit contains contains Organic pre spawned mushroom compost "Log", a humidity bag to place the kit in and full  instructions.
WHERE SHOULD I GROW MY KIT?
Locate the kits anywhere within the home, OUT of direct sunlight, avoiding radiators and heat sources.

Locate grow kit within a temperature range of
 12-20 °C

With 17-19 °C being optimum for steady growth

DO I HAVE TO START THE KIT IMMEDIATELY?
Yes, this Shiitake Log is a "Ready growing" variety of kit, so it will need looking after immediately, being removed out of the postal box upon delivery.

The longest you could go without starting the growing process, would be one week. ONLY if you can keep the Log in its wrapper, then place it in the fridge to slow down its growth. This being said it is always best to start the kits as soon as possible.

Do i remove the plastic bag?
The bag the block comes in should be removed, then placed into the humidity bag.
HOW DO I POSITION THE Humidity BAG?
The Shiitake "Log" should be placed within the center of the bottom of the included humidity bag, to the height of the kit. An opening should be left at the top, the same width of the width of the kit. DO NOT put the bag over the top of the kit as this will suffocate it.
Watering Guidelines
You should spray into the inside of the humidity bag to ensure high humidity around the block, typically twice daily. The hydration comes from within the block, you are just providing a humid environment for it to fruit. If there is water pooling at the bottom of the bag, please empty this and dial down the water if necessary.
How /  when to pick
It is important to pick the mushrooms on time for maximum flavour, it is best to pick them just as the caps start turning up. To harvest fold the bag down, cutting each mushroom as close to the block as possible.
It is best to crop the entire block in one go, to prepare for the next crop.

How do i get a second crop?
After the first crop has been harvested, there is a possibility for a second crop to develop. If you’re feeling extra confident, clean the block of any debris, ensuring stems are cut off close to the black and immerse it under water for between 15-30 minutes. Place the block back in the bag and start the process again. You should see a second crop start to develop, but if not, don’t be disheartened. The majority of the crop comes in the first picking.
Cooking Tips
Shiitakes enjoy gourmet status in the culinary world. Sliced and sautéed
with butter and parsley, they release a tantalizing flavour unknown to
other foods. Very low in calories and high in nutrients and vitamins.
Fresh and dried Shiitake Mushrooms have many uses, served in Miso
soup and used in Japanese and Chinese cookery. Enjoy!

FAQ Card
What do i get?

  • With each ready growing White, Chestnut or Oyster kit you will get a pot with mushrooms already growing so you're guaranteed to see results. The Lidded kits are exactly the same but with the ability to choose when to start the growing process.
Growing times?
Your Ready Growing kit will be ready for your first harvest in just a few days, Then after your first harvest, your next 3 crops will be at weekly intervals.
Where is best to put my kit?
Indoors, anywhere out of direct sunlight, we always say kitchen side is a good place.
How long will the kit last me?
Your kit will last you between 4-6 weeks, your first harvest should be within a few days, We generally see people getting between 3-4 crops of mushrooms per kit, with 7-10 days between each crop, after this period the compost loses its nutrition and there is less for the mushrooms to use for growth.
When do I water my mushroom kit?
The ready growing kits You want to keep the top inch of the soil moist, so we recommend to water as required to do so, which is typically a gentle water once or twice a day.

The Yellow and Pink Oyster kits, spray each hole with a misting spray bottle 2-3 times a day.
How and When do I pick?
Your kit can provide you with different types of mushrooms If you would like the bigger portabello "flat" mushrooms, you will have to create space for them to grow into, by removing the surrounding smaller mushrooms. in essence, you can pick the mushrooms at the size you want them.

How to pick - whilst supporting surrounding mushrooms, hold the mushroom gently at the top and twist and pull to remove the whole mushroom with the root, once done cut cleanly of at the stem and discard the root.

The Yellow and Pink Oyster Kits Pick by slicing off the whole clump as close to the pot as possible. Do not let get too large. Pick clump when ready and put in fridge to use.
How to produce the most yield?
Your pot has a fixed yield potential which is produced by more than one pick.
The first harvest, already growing, produces a good crop on its own. The natural variations around and within each pot and how you harvest dictates the weight of the first pick. Typically 60% of the crop. Allowing the first pick to over mature and drop brown spores and drying of the top soil make the next picks more difficult and smaller. Generally the sooner you pick the first break the better later picks will be.

Mushrooms like humidity but also need evaporation to produce more crop. You can use the plastic surround to vary this.

If the compost cools down, for example overnight, below the air temperature, then evaporation can cease or reduce making re pin slow or delayed.
This can be corrected by standing in warm water but not over 30 degrees C.
( do not submerge)

Very dry or very wet top soil can stop cropping.
Any tips for second picks?
Further to the previous question,

Pick of the first flush of mushrooms completely including any dead tissue or mushrooms that did not mature. When picking be sure to leave the top soil on and as undisturbed as possible.

Remember the temperature range in the air is 10 C to 21C. Colder than this will delay the crop and too hot reduces the numbers. Often cropping will restart when ambient temperature returns to that range.

If top soil is dry after the first harvest give a water of about 100 mls. More crop is encouraged by spraying over daily provided this is not such as to make the top soil wetter and wetter.

Do not allow any single mushroom that appears to fill out on its own as this inhibits more crop until that one is picked off.

Next pick appears as tiny mushrooms, water more copiously as these reach 10p to 50p size.

Whilst the first pick is prepared for you, the next picks do present a challenge in the sense of how well you do. Practice makes perfect. Enjoy the challenge!
What do I do once finished growing the mushrooms?
Pull the bag out of the pod, and you can either use the compost in the garden or discard in the garden waste bin.
The lidded Kits - My kit as White growth in the compost? IS THIS NORMAL?
Yes this is quite normal. When you open the lid and remove the compost bag. The white growth you see is 'The Mycelium' starting to grow. This is quite normal. It is the mycelium that your mushrooms will grow from.
My Yellow / Pink Oysters have only grown out of two holes?
Your Oyster Mushrooms can grow out of the holes at different times. often one or two holes will start growing before the third. Keep spraying all holes.
