Mushroom Coffee vs Normal Coffee: What Actually Changes in Taste, Caffeine, and Your Daily Routine
Mushroom Coffee vs Normal Coffee: What Actually Changes in Taste, Caffeine, and Your Daily Routine
Mushroom coffee is one of those products that sounds stranger than it is. If you have never tried it, the name alone can put you off. But once you understand what it actually tastes like, how the caffeine compares, and how it fits into your morning, the concept makes a lot more sense.
This guide covers the honest, practical differences between mushroom coffee and a standard cup, so you can decide whether it suits you before spending money on a tub you might not finish.
We produce our own mushroom coffee range here in the UK, so we have had plenty of feedback from first-time buyers about what surprised them, what they liked, and what took getting used to. This article draws on that.
What mushroom coffee actually tastes like
The number one question people ask is whether it tastes like mushrooms. It does not. Not in the way you might expect, anyway. There is no shiitake or chestnut mushroom flavour coming through. What you get is a slightly smoother, slightly deeper cup of coffee with a roasted, earthy undertone that most people describe as malty or nutty rather than mushroomy.
The coffee flavour is still very much the dominant taste. In our Calibrate instant mushroom coffee, the blend uses Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Ashwagandha alongside instant coffee. The mushroom extracts are present in the taste, but they sit behind the coffee rather than competing with it. Most customers tell us it tastes like a rich, smooth instant coffee with a slightly rounded finish.
Our ground Lion's Mane coffee is a 100% Arabica medium roast blended with Lion's Mane extract. Because it is ground rather than instant, the coffee flavour is fuller and more complex, closer to what you would get from a cafetiere or filter machine. The Lion's Mane adds depth without changing the character of the coffee itself.
If you are someone who drinks coffee black, you will notice the earthiness more than someone who adds milk. Oat milk, in particular, pairs well with mushroom coffee and takes the edge off any earthy notes. A pinch of cinnamon or a small amount of cocoa powder can also help if you find the flavour too unfamiliar at first.
Honest note: Some people find mushroom coffee too earthy on first try, especially if they are used to sweet or milky coffees. That is normal. We find that by the third or fourth cup, most people stop noticing the difference. If you are genuinely unsure, our instant sachets are the lowest-risk way to try it without committing to a full tub.
How the caffeine compares
This is where mushroom coffee genuinely differs from a normal cup. Standard instant coffee contains roughly 60 to 80mg of caffeine per serving. A filter or cafetiere coffee sits higher, typically around 90 to 140mg depending on how strong you make it.
Our Calibrate instant mushroom coffee contains 34mg of caffeine per serving, roughly half the caffeine of a typical instant. The ground Lion's Mane coffee sits slightly higher because you control the brew strength, but the serving suggestion of 8 to 23 grams still delivers less caffeine than the same amount of a standard Arabica grind.
The practical effect of this is noticeable. You still feel alert and focused, but without the sharp spike and crash that stronger coffees can produce. Several of our customers have mentioned that they stopped getting afternoon energy dips after switching, which may be related to the lower caffeine combined with the adaptogenic ingredients rather than any single factor.
If you currently drink two or three strong coffees a day and switch to mushroom coffee overnight, you may notice the lower caffeine. A better approach is to replace one cup at a time, starting with your mid-morning or afternoon coffee, and keep your usual morning cup for the first week while you adjust.
What adaptogens are and what they do in mushroom coffee
The word "adaptogen" appears on most mushroom coffee packaging, and it can sound more complicated than it is. Adaptogens are natural compounds, found in certain mushrooms and herbs, that have traditionally been used to help the body manage stress. They have been part of Chinese and Japanese food culture for centuries, long before the term adaptogen was coined.
In our coffee blends, the key adaptogens are Lion's Mane mushroom extract, Cordyceps mushroom extract, and Ashwagandha root extract. Each of these has a different traditional use. Lion's Mane is associated with cognitive support, focus and mental clarity. Cordyceps is traditionally linked to physical energy and endurance. Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb associated with stress reduction and calm.
It is worth being realistic about what to expect from a food product. These are not medicines and we are not making medical claims. What most of our customers report is a sense of feeling calmer and more focused after their morning coffee compared to a standard cup, which is consistent with both the lower caffeine and the adaptogenic ingredients working together. Some people notice a difference within a few days. Others say it took a week or two of daily use before they felt anything change.
What to look for on labels: Check that the ingredients list says "extract" rather than just "powder." An extract means the active compounds (such as hericenones and erinacines in Lion's Mane) have been properly extracted in a bioavailable format your body can use. A powder is less concentrated and often does not dissolve well, which affects both the taste and the potential benefits. All of our mushroom coffees use fruit body extracts, not mycelium-based powders.
How much Lion's Mane is in each cup and how much you need
A commonly recommended daily intake for Lion's Mane extract is between 500mg and 1000mg. Our Calibrate instant coffee contains 500mg of Lion's Mane extract per sachet, alongside 500mg of Cordyceps extract and 300mg of Ashwagandha extract. One cup a day puts you at the lower end of the suggested range. Two cups would bring you to 1000mg, which is the upper end of what most people aim for.
Taking more than 1000mg is not harmful, but the benefits tend to plateau, so there is no real advantage to going higher. One to two cups a day is a sensible and cost-effective routine for most people.
Instant vs ground: which format suits your routine
We offer two formats because people make coffee in different ways, and both need to be easy enough that you actually use them daily.
The Calibrate instant mushroom coffee comes in individual sachets, making it the simplest option. Add hot water, stir, and it is ready. The sachets are easy to take to work or when travelling. This format contains Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Ashwagandha, so you get a broader blend of adaptogens in each cup.
If you prefer a larger supply rather than individual sachets, our Perform instant mushroom coffee comes in a 180g bag with 18 servings. This blend uses Lion's Mane, Chaga, Maitake, Tremella and Maca, so the adaptogen profile is wider than the Calibrate sachets. It works the same way, just add hot water, but gives you more servings per purchase and a slightly different combination of mushroom extracts.
The ground mushroom coffee is for anyone who prefers filter, cafetiere, or espresso-based coffee. It is a 100% Arabica medium roast blended with Lion's Mane extract, so the coffee quality is higher than the instant, but you need a brewing method to make it. This format focuses purely on Lion's Mane rather than a multi-adaptogen blend.
If you are not sure which to try first, the instant sachets are the easier starting point. Lower cost, no equipment needed, and you can try a few cups before deciding whether mushroom coffee is for you.
What if you do not like coffee at all?
Not everyone enjoys the taste of coffee, even with adaptogens smoothing it out. If that is you, our mushroom hot chocolate uses Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Reishi in a rich chocolate base with a hint of cinnamon. It is naturally sweeter than the coffee, has no caffeine from coffee (just the small amount naturally present in cocoa), and works well as an evening drink.
We also produce a Lion's Mane mushroom chocolate bar for anyone who prefers a snack format over a drink. It is vegan, uses real chocolate, and the mushroom flavour is barely noticeable behind the cocoa.
The point is that mushroom coffee is one way to include adaptogens in your routine, but it is not the only way. Choosing a format you actually enjoy is more important than forcing yourself to drink something you do not like, because the benefits come with consistent daily use, not a single cup.
A simple first-week routine
If you are new to mushroom coffee and want to give it a fair trial without wasting the product, here is a straightforward approach for your first week.
Days 1 to 3: Replace your mid-morning or afternoon coffee with one cup of mushroom coffee. Keep your usual morning coffee as normal. This lets you taste the difference without missing the caffeine hit you are used to first thing.
Days 4 to 5: If you are enjoying the taste, swap your morning coffee for mushroom coffee as well. You may notice you feel steadier through the morning without the usual spike and dip.
Days 6 to 7: By now you should have a clear sense of whether you like the taste and whether you notice any difference in how you feel. Some people commit to a full switch at this point. Others prefer to keep one regular coffee in their day and use mushroom coffee for the rest. Both approaches work.
Taste tip: If the flavour feels too earthy during the first few days, try it with oat milk and a pinch of cinnamon. This rounds out the earthiness without adding sugar. Most people find that by day three or four, the taste feels normal and the earthiness stops standing out.
What our customers say
Customer feedback has been consistently positive since we launched the coffee range. Common themes include better alertness without jitters, a smoother energy curve through the day, and genuine surprise at how good it tastes. One customer mentioned they had been drinking it daily for eight months and would not touch anything else. Another said the instant sachets helped them wean off regular coffee entirely.
Our Calibrate instant coffee was also reviewed by The Daily Mail, receiving a 5 out of 5 rating, which caused us to sell out of all current stock within a few hours.
That said, it is not for everyone. A small number of people find the taste too earthy regardless of what they add to it, and for them, the hot chocolate or chocolate bar is usually a better fit. There is no single product that works for every palate, which is why we offer several formats across the full range.
How to choose the right mushroom coffee
When shopping for mushroom coffee, whether from us or anyone else, there are a few things worth checking before you buy.
First, check the ingredients for the word "extract" rather than "powder." This is the single biggest quality indicator. Extracts contain the active compounds in a form your body can actually absorb. Powders are less processed, often contain substrate or filler material, and do not dissolve properly, which makes the drink gritty and less enjoyable.
Second, check whether the product uses mushroom fruit bodies or mycelium. Fruit bodies are the actual mushroom. Mycelium is the root-like network that grows through the substrate. Extracts made from fruit bodies tend to contain higher concentrations of the compounds people are looking for. All of our mushroom coffees use fruit body extracts only.
Third, check the dosage per serving. A meaningful amount of Lion's Mane extract is 500mg or more per serving. If the label does not state the amount, or lists it well below 500mg, the product may not contain enough to make a practical difference.
