Oyster Mushroom Kits

Your oyster kit includes a fully colonized substrate block with pre-cut holes and detailed growing instructions.

Locate the kits anywhere within the home, out of direct sunlight, avoiding radiators and heat sources.

Locate grow kit within a temperature range of 14–21 °C, with 18–19 °C being optimum for steady growth.

Please note: these kits are designed to be grown indoors. Avoid the following locations:

  • Greenhouses / Garden Sheds
  • Airing Cupboards
  • Conservatories
  • Windowsills
  • Small Cupboards

As this is a ready growing kit, your kits should already have their growing holes cut with an "X" Please check this and if necessary, without any issues, you will be able to add your own "X" into the black plastic.

No, in order for the mushrooms to colonize the compost needs to be protected from the elements, please ensure the "X" is folded over and protecting the compost rather than having it open.

Your Oyster Mushrooms, by nature can grow out of the holes at different times. Often one or two holes will start growing before the third. Keep spraying all holes.

Spray into each hole with regular water with a spray bottle, 2-3 times per day. Keep spraying the growths and as they develop, also the mushrooms at the same frequency above.

Pick by pulling out the whole clump, as close to the box as possible. Pick the mushrooms once fully developed but do not let to over grow and flatten out.

If you see white "dust" coming from the mushrooms, it means they're dropping their spores. This means you've left them slightly too long before harvesting, worry not, they are still good to eat, but should be picked urgently.

Oyster mushrooms have a delicate flavor and tender texture. Sauté in butter or oil over medium-high heat until golden. They pair beautifully with garlic, thyme, and white wine.

Shiitake Mushroom Kits

Your shiitake kit includes a fully colonized substrate "Log" and a humidity bag and detailed growing instructions.

Yes, this Shiitake Log is a "Ready growing" variety of kit, so it will need looking after immediately, being removed out of the postal box upon delivery. The longest you could go without starting the growing process, would be one week. ONLY if you can keep the Log in its wrapper, then place it in the fridge to slow down its growth. This being said it is always best to start the kits as soon as possible.

The bag the block comes in should be removed, then placed into the humidity bag.

The Shiitake "Log" should be placed within the center of the bottom of the included humidity bag, to the height of the kit. An opening should be left at the top, the same width of the width of the kit. DO NOT put the bag over the top of the kit as this will suffocate it.

You should spray into the inside of the humidity bag to ensure high humidity around the block, typically twice daily. The hydration comes from within the block, you are just providing a humid environment for it to fruit. If there is water pooling at the bottom of the bag, please empty this and dial down the water if necessary.

It is important to pick the mushrooms on time for maximum flavour, it is best to pick them just as the caps start turning up. To harvest fold the bag down, cutting each mushroom as close to the block as possible. It is best to crop the entire block in one go, to prepare for the next crop.

After the first crop has been harvested, there is a possibility for a second crop to develop. If you're feeling extra confident, clean the block of any debris, ensuring stems are cut off close to the black and immerse it under water for between 15-30 minutes. Place the block back in the bag and start the process again. You should see a second crop start to develop, but if not, don't be disheartened. The majority of the crop comes in the first picking.

Shiitakes enjoy gourmet status in the culinary world. Sliced and sautéed with butter and parsley, they release a tantalizing flavour unknown to other foods. Very low in calories and high in nutrients and vitamins. Fresh and dried Shiitake Mushrooms have many uses, served in Miso soup and used in Japanese and Chinese cookery. Enjoy!

White/Chestnut Mushroom Kits

Your kit includes: colonized substrate, a casing bag of topsoil and detailed growing instructions.

Choose a location with temperatures between 14-21°C, indirect light, and good air circulation. Kitchens and bathrooms work well due to higher humidity.

Remove the kit from the postal box, follow the instructions, but essentially it is a case of just spraying twice daily.

The white growth is healthy mycelium - the root system of the mushroom. This is completely normal and shows your kit is thriving.

Remove the lid when you see an even level of mycelium on the topsoil, typically after 7-8 days.

Mist 2-3 times daily with a fine spray. The surface should be moist but not waterlogged. Reduce misting once mushrooms start forming.

Harvest by twisting and pulling the entire cluster from the base. Clean off any substrate before cooking.

Harvest when caps are fully opened but before they start dropping spores (white powder). This is typically 5-7 days after pins appear.

Small flies can be attracted to mushroom kits. They're harmless but annoying. Use yellow sticky traps nearby and ensure good air circulation.
