How Do Ready Growing Mushroom Kits work?

Ready Growing Mushroom Kits: How They Work, Who They Suit, and What to Expect

Ready growing mushroom kits from Merryhill Mushrooms arrive with the growing process already underway. The mycelium has colonised the substrate before the kit leaves the farm, so your first harvest can appear in as little as 7 to 24 days with the right conditions at home.

A ready growing kit skips the longest and most uncertain part of mushroom cultivation. Instead of waiting weeks for mycelium to colonise a block from scratch, the kit arrives pre-spawned and ready to fruit. That means less waiting, fewer variables, and a much higher chance of success for beginners, gift recipients, and anyone growing mushrooms at home for the first time.

What "ready growing" actually means

Every mushroom begins life as mycelium, a white, thread-like network that spreads through a growing medium called substrate or compost. In commercial mushroom farming, this colonisation stage happens in controlled environments over several weeks before any mushrooms appear.

A ready growing kit arrives after that colonisation stage is completed at our mushroom farm in Sussex. The mycelium network has already established itself throughout the substrate block, and the kit is primed to produce mushrooms once it receives the right combination of humidity, airflow, light, and temperature.

This is different from a typical mushroom growing kit where the customer receives an uncolonized or partially colonised block and must wait for the mycelium to spread before any fruiting can begin. With a ready growing kit, the setup is simpler: open the box, position the kit, mist regularly, and wait for mushrooms to form.

Think of it this way, a ready growing kit is like a plant that already has roots established in the pot. You still need to water it and give it the right spot, but the hardest work has been done for you.

Why ready growing kits crop faster than typical kits

The time between opening a mushroom kit and picking your first harvest depends mainly on how far along the colonisation process is upon arrival and what species you are growing. Ready growing kits have a significant head start because the substrate is fully colonised before dispatch.

This speed advantage is the main reason ready growing kits suit gift-giving particularly well. The recipient sees results quickly, which builds excitement and confidence rather than frustration.

Who ready growing kits are designed for

Ready growing kits are built around simplicity. They suit people who want a rewarding growing experience without needing specialist knowledge, equipment, or space.

Beginners

No prior mushroom growing experience needed. The colonisation is complete, so the main job is keeping humidity up and conditions stable. The kit includes step-by-step instructions covering misting, placement, and what to expect day by day.

Gift buyers

Ready growing kits make excellent gifts because the recipient does not need to understand the science behind mushroom cultivation. Quick results and a visible growing process create a hands-on experience that feels rewarding from the first week. You can see our gift ordering guide here

Home cooks

Growing mushrooms at home means harvest-fresh flavour and texture that shop-bought mushrooms rarely match. Recipes using home-grown mushrooms benefit from firmer texture and a cleaner bite, especially varieties like Lion's Mane and Oyster.

Families with children

Watching mushrooms grow from pins to full-sized fruit in a matter of days is a visible, fast-moving science project. The kits are safe for indoor use and do not require chemicals, fertilisers, or outdoor space.

What conditions ready growing kits need

Even though the hardest part of the growing process is already complete, the kit still needs the right environment to produce mushrooms. Four conditions determine how quickly and how well your kit fruits.

Humidity

Mushrooms need moisture in the air around them. A fine mist sprayed two to three times a day keeps the surface damp without waterlogging the block. A clean spray bottle with a fine nozzle works well.

Temperature

Most ready growing kits fruit best between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Avoid radiators, sunny windowsills, and rooms that swing between hot and cold. A stable, cool room produces the best results.

Airflow

Mushrooms need fresh air exchange to form properly. A room with some natural air movement is ideal. Avoid sealed cupboards, airing cupboards, or rooms with no ventilation.

Light

Indirect daylight is enough. Mushrooms do not photosynthesise like plants, but gentle light helps guide growth direction. Direct sunlight can dry the kit and overheat the block.

The best rooms in most UK homes are kitchens, utility rooms, spare bedrooms and bathrooms anywhere with stable temperature, some natural light, and reasonable airflow. Avoid conservatories in summer and unheated garages in winter.

What to expect: the growing timeline

Every mushroom variety grows at its own pace, but the general pattern follows the same stages. Here is what a typical ready growing kit timeline looks like from the day you open the box.

1

Day 1 — Unbox and position

Open the kit, follow the included instructions, and place it in a suitable location. Begin your misting routine. The kit may look like a plain white block at this stage — that is normal. The white material is healthy mycelium.

2

Day 3  â€” First signs of life.

Small bumps or knots may begin to form on the surface. These are primordia, commonly called "pins", and they are the very beginning of mushroom growth. Not all kits show pins this early — some varieties take longer, and that is completely normal.

3

Day 6 — Rapid growth

Pins develop into recognisable mushroom shapes. Growth can be surprisingly fast at this stage — some varieties double in size overnight. Continue misting and keep conditions stable. This is the stage where temperature swings and dry air can stall growth.

4

Days 7-10  â€” First harvest

Mushrooms are ready to harvest when they reach full size but before the caps flatten out or begin to drop spores. Harvest timing affects both flavour and texture — picking slightly earlier gives a firmer bite. Use a gentle twist-and-pull motion or a clean cut at the base.

5

After the first harvest — Second flush

Many ready growing kits can produce a second (and sometimes third) flush of mushrooms. After harvesting, rest the block for a few days, then resume misting. The second flush is typically smaller than the first but still rewarding. When the block stops producing, it can be composted in the garden.

Choosing a variety: which ready growing kit suits you

Merryhill Mushrooms offers ready growing kits in several varieties. Each one grows differently, tastes different, and suits different cooking styles. Here is a quick guide to help you choose.

Lion's Mane

A shaggy, white mushroom with a fibrous, pull-apart texture. Popular for nuggets, steaks, and stir-fries. Mild, slightly sweet flavour with a lobster-like chew when cooked. One of the most visually striking varieties to grow at home.

Oyster

Fast-growing and forgiving, oyster mushrooms are one of the easiest varieties for beginners. Delicate flavour, velvety texture, and excellent in pasta, soups, and stir-fries. Crisps beautifully when pan-fried or air-fried.

Chestnut

A nutty, earthy flavour with a firmer texture than white mushrooms. Excellent in sauces, omelettes, and roasted trays. A familiar taste that suits everyday cooking and appeals to mushroom lovers and beginners alike. Semi "ready growing" this kit will need to be activated which adds a couple of weeks to usual crop times, but makes it perfect for gifting thanks to the kits shelf life!

White

The classic mushroom mild, versatile, and familiar to everyone. Works in almost any dish from salads to stews. Grows reliably at home with consistent temperature and humidity. A great starting point for complete beginners. Same as our Chestnut kit, this kit contains fully colonised mushroom compost but thanks to the need to activate the kit, this is great for gifting, crops with 16-24 days.

Shiitake

Rich, savoury, and deeply umami. Shiitake mushrooms are prized in Asian cooking and work beautifully in noodles, ramen, risotto, and roasted dishes. Slightly longer growing time but worth the wait for the depth of flavour.

Common questions about ready growing kits

These are the questions Merryhill Mushrooms customers ask most often about ready growing kits. Each answer is written to help you get the best results from your first kit.

What is included in a Merryhill Mushrooms ready growing kit?

Each kit includes a fully colonised substrate block or log with an established mycelium network and clear step-by-step instructions. Some varieties may include a bag or liner for humidity control. The kit is designed to fruit with no additional equipment, a clean spray bottle for misting is all you need at home.

How quickly will mushrooms start growing?

Most ready growing kits show first signs of growth (pins) within days and then crop within 7 to 10 days when conditions are right.  Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms tend to be the fastest; chestnut can take a little longer.

What temperature does the kit need?

Most ready growing kits fruit best between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius. A cool, stable room is ideal. Avoid placing the kit near radiators, in direct sunlight, or in rooms that experience large temperature swings between day and night. Consistency matters more than hitting an exact number.

How many harvests can I get from one kit?

Most kits produce at least two flushes, and some can manage three or four depending on the variety and care. The first flush is usually the largest. After each harvest, rest the block for a few days and then resume misting to encourage the next flush. When the block stops producing, it can be composted.

What if my kit does not grow?

If you see no growth after 7 to 10 days, check three things: humidity (are you misting regularly?), temperature (is the room between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius?), and airflow (is the kit in a ventilated space, not a sealed cupboard?). If conditions are right and nothing happens, contact customer support with a photo of the kit and details of where it is placed, the team can usually diagnose the issue quickly.

Can I store the kit before starting it?

Yes, but for a limited time. If you cannot start the kit immediately, store it in a cool room (not the fridge) out of direct sunlight. Ideally, start within a few days of arrival. The longer a ready growing kit waits, the more the mycelium advances, which can reduce the quality of the first flush.

Is it safe to grow mushrooms indoors with children or pets?

Yes. The mushrooms grown from Merryhill Mushrooms kits are edible culinary varieties they are the same species sold in supermarkets and used by restaurants. Place the kit somewhere stable where it will not be knocked over, and wash hands after handling the growing block as normal hygiene practice.

What to do after your first harvest

The first harvest is just the beginning. Most ready growing kits have enough nutrition in the substrate to produce a second and sometimes a third flush of mushrooms. After picking, remove any remaining stumps, rest the block for a few days without misting, then resume your normal routine.

Left: freshly picked from the kit — Right: stored correctly in a paper bag to be placed in the fridge for freshness

Fresh home-grown mushrooms keep well in the fridge for several days when stored in a paper bag or loosely wrapped — never in a sealed plastic bag, which causes sweating and spoilage. If you grow more than you can eat, mushrooms can be dried, frozen, or cooked into sauces and stored for later.

When the kit has finished producing, the spent substrate makes excellent compost. It breaks down well in garden soil and adds organic matter to beds and borders.
