Steve Holman

Great product and very tasty. I chose the Lions Mane and have enjoyed a few days of delicious meals. My next batch is a few days away from being harvested too.

I am very happy with my Lions Mane Mushroom Kit. After a couple of weeks or so, the mushrooms started to grow. There are 4 holes in the box for the mushrooms to grow and all 4 had a mushroom. The top two holes had bigger mushrooms, and the two side holes had smaller mushrooms. I cooked some as mushroom steaks and the rest in chunks. The texture was great. Really firm. It was also great fun watching them grow and develop their teeth. I am hoping for a second flush so am still spraying the kit with water and waiting! This would be great as a present, or for anyone who likes lions mane mushrooms.

Gourmet Lion's Mane Mushroom Growing Kit

Lion's Mane Mushroom Growing Kit

Spectacular. Unique. Ready in weeks.

Keep your kit indoors in a bright spot with indirect light, between 10°C and 20°C, away from draughts and direct heat. Spray damp paper towels inside the humidity bag daily and your first Lion's Mane crop will be ready to harvest within 7 to 10 days.

One of the most visually spectacular mushrooms you can grow at home, the cascading white spines are unlike anything you'll find in a supermarket, and the flavour is extraordinary: tender, subtly sweet, and often compared to crab or lobster.

Every kit is hand planted in small batches on our family farm in Storrington, West Sussex, using peat-free compost colonised with vigorous Hericium erinaceus mycelium.

This kit produces a total yield of approximately 1kg of fresh Lion's Mane across 2 to 3 flushes over 4 to 5 weeks. The first flush is typically the most spectacular.

Why choose our kits?

Our ready growing mushroom kits stand out from other brands due to the fact that the mushroom growing process has been partially started.

This unique feature provides several advantages.
It eliminates the need to carry out the lengthy inoculation, saving time and effort.

By receiving the kits at a stage where the kit is pre started, we can ensure the mycelium is healthy before shipping, ensuring healthy crops.

The riskiest part of mushroom growing is avoiding any contamination on the substrate during colonisation, so we have taken care of this portion of the process, prior to despatch.

Nothing beats the flavour of freshly picked mushrooms, and it's great fun watching them grow - children love them too! Each kit contains a colonized Lions Mane Mushroom Log ready to explode with Lions Mane Mushrooms. The mushrooms are "Ready Growing" so all you need to add water as instructed and the Mushrooms will develop.

Mushrooms will continue to grow if left between 10 and 20 degrees - ideal for your kitchen or utility room. In daylight but not direct sunlight. Full growing advice is provided on the instructions and with FAQ's on our website and our contact details help is always on hand should you require some guidance.

How to grow your kit

1.  Keep the Lion's Mane kit indoors in a bright spot with indirect light, away from draughts, direct sun, and heat sources, and make sure the temperature stays between 10°C and 20°C.

2.  Open the humidity bag fully so it forms a rectangular shape and keep the top open throughout the process. Place the kit in the middle of the bag, leaving space around the side holes for growth and fresh air.

3.  Fold paper towels into small rectangles and place them around the base of the kit inside the bag, then spray these towels daily so they stay damp and create humidity.

4.  Avoid overwatering, and pour away any pooled water if it appears. Within a few weeks, the first crop should be ready to pick.

5.  Harvest when the teeth or spines reach around 1 to 1.5 cm long, or when white spores appear underneath.

6.  Support the mushroom gently and pull it away from the box with the root attached, then trim off and discard the root before use.

7.  Continue the same care routine afterwards, as a second crop may form, although most of the yield often comes from the first harvest.

Lions Mane Mushrooms: Frequently Asked Questions

About & Cooking

What are Lions Mane mushrooms?

Lions Mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) are distinctive, white shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lion's mane. They are valued for their unique appearance, culinary uses and yummy taste.

Can you cook with Lions Mane mushrooms?

Yes, Lions Mane mushrooms are edible and can be cooked. They are often used in gourmet dishes for their crab or lobster-like texture and mild, slightly sweet flavour.

How to cook Lions Mane mushrooms?

Lions Mane mushrooms can be prepared in various ways, including sautéing, grilling, roasting, or pan-frying. Their texture and ability to absorb flavours make them an excellent meat substitute in dishes like stir-fries, soups and even sandwiches!

Can Lion's Mane mushrooms be eaten raw?

Lion's Mane mushrooms can be eaten raw, but for enhanced flavour and texture, cooking is recommended.

Can you dry Lions Mane mushrooms?

Yes, Lions Mane mushrooms can be dried and stored for later use. Once dried, they can be rehydrated by soaking in water before cooking or used as a powder in recipes.

Where To buy Lions Mane In The UK?

Within the UK it is illegal to forage Lions mane, so it tends to be best to grow your own. You can still buy it and enjoy as extracts, powders, tinctures and growing kits. Occasionally you can find it in markets, but it is quite rare.

Growing Your Kit

How do you grow Lions Mane mushrooms?

In the wild, Lions Mane mushrooms grow on hardwood trees in temperate forests, particularly in North America, Europe and Asia. They can also be easily grown at home using our ready-growing kits, which provide everything you need to cultivate them indoors or outdoors, ensuring a fresh supply of these gourmet mushrooms.

How long does a Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit take to produce mushrooms?

A Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit usually starts producing its first crop within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on temperature, humidity, and airflow. Lion's Mane grows best when the kit is kept between 10°C and 20°C in bright but indirect light. Steady moisture and the right room conditions help the mycelium fruit faster and support a stronger first flush.

What temperature is best for a Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit?

The best temperature for a Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit is usually between 10°C and 20°C. Lion's Mane is more heat sensitive than some other gourmet mushrooms, so warm rooms, radiators, and direct sun can slow growth or affect quality. Cooler indoor spaces such as kitchens, utility rooms, and well-ventilated rooms usually give better results when humidity is also kept stable.

Harvesting & Troubleshooting

How do you know when Lion's Mane mushrooms are ready to harvest?

Lion's Mane mushrooms are ready to harvest when the fruit body looks full, white, and firm, with visible shaggy spines forming around the surface. Mature Lion's Mane should still look fresh and evenly coloured rather than yellow, dry, or collapsing. Early picking is better than late picking because texture, flavour, and moisture are usually at their best before the mushroom starts ageing.

Why is my Lion's Mane mushroom turning yellow or drying out?

A Lion's Mane mushroom usually turns yellow or starts drying out because the air is too dry, the room is too warm, or the mushroom has been left too long before harvest. Low humidity can stop healthy development and cause the surface to lose its bright white appearance. Better moisture control, cooler temperatures, and harvesting at the right stage usually prevent this problem.

How many crops can a Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit produce?

A Lion's Mane mushroom growing kit can often produce two or three crops when it is kept in the right conditions and cared for properly between flushes. Multiple harvests depend on the health of the substrate, the room temperature, and how well moisture is maintained after the first crop is picked. Later flushes are often smaller, but they can still give fresh home-grown mushrooms from the same kit.

Lion's Mane vs Other Mushroom Growing Kits

Lion's Mane mushroom growing kits suit growers who want a distinctive gourmet mushroom with a soft, shaggy appearance, a tender pull-apart texture, and a simple indoor setup. Lion's Mane, also known as Hericium erinaceus, grows differently from oyster, shiitake, and chestnut kits because it forms a rounded white fruiting body with hanging teeth rather than flat caps or clustered stems. That makes it one of the most recognisable home mushroom kits for anyone looking to grow fresh gourmet mushrooms in the UK.

Lion's Mane vs Oyster Mushroom Kits

Oyster mushroom growing kits, including Pink Oyster and Black Pearl Oyster, usually grow faster and produce clustered mushrooms with visible caps and stems. Oyster varieties are often chosen by beginners because they pin quickly and show obvious day-by-day growth. Lion's Mane is still beginner friendly, but it prefers steadier humidity and a cooler range of 10°C to 20°C, so the growing method is a little different from standard oyster mushroom kits.

Lion's Mane vs Shiitake Mushroom Kits

Shiitake mushroom growing kits are a strong comparison for growers who want a rich savoury mushroom for cooking at home. Shiitake produces firmer brown caps with a deeper umami flavour, while Lion's Mane produces a white shaggy mushroom with a softer texture that many people compare to crab or lobster when cooked. Both are gourmet options, but Lion's Mane stands out more for appearance and texture, while shiitake is often chosen for its classic cap shape and stronger earthy flavour.

Lion's Mane vs King Oyster Mushroom Kits

King Oyster mushroom kits are another close match because both are popular gourmet mushrooms with a meaty eating quality. King Oyster is valued for its thick dense stem and small cap, while Lion's Mane is known for its rounded body and delicate hanging spines. Growers who want a firmer bite often choose King Oyster, while growers who want a softer texture and a more unusual looking mushroom often prefer Lion's Mane.

Which Mushroom Growing Kit Should You Choose?

Lion's Mane is a strong choice if you want an indoor mushroom growing kit that looks unusual, grows well in a cool room, and produces a fresh gourmet harvest with real kitchen appeal. Oyster kits are often better for very fast visible results, shiitake kits suit growers who want rich savoury caps, and King Oyster kits appeal to people who want thick stems with a dense texture. Lion's Mane sits in its own category because it combines easy home growing with a very distinctive appearance, a premium gourmet feel, and a harvest that is quite different from standard supermarket mushrooms.
