What Is The Best Mushroom Growing Kit?
What Is the Best Mushroom Growing Kit?
The best mushroom growing kit is the one that works. That sounds simple, but it is the honest answer. A kit that arrives ready to fruit, produces mushrooms within days, and does not require specialist knowledge will always outperform one that looks impressive on paper but fails during colonisation or sits dormant for weeks.
That is why most of the mushroom growing kits we produce and sell here in the UK are what we call ready growing. The compost has been fully spawn run at our farm in Sussex, the mycelium is established, and the kit is well on its way to cropping its first flush of mushrooms by the time it reaches you. Less waiting, less risk, and a much higher success rate for beginners.
What makes a mushroom kit "ready growing"
A ready growing kit arrives with the hardest part of mushroom cultivation already complete. The mycelium has fully colonised the substrate before dispatch, which means the kit is less prone to infection or contamination and is primed to fruit as soon as you provide the right conditions at home: humidity, airflow, indirect light, and a temperature between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius.
The daily care is minimal. A quick mist in the morning and evening is enough for most varieties. Our misting guide covers exactly how much water each variety needs, and the whole routine takes less than two minutes a day.

Which variety should you choose?
When it comes to growing mushrooms, there is a wide variety of species to choose from. Each one grows differently, tastes different, and suits different cooking styles. Here is what sets each variety apart.
Oyster Mushrooms
The fastest growing variety in our range. Oyster mushrooms are known for their quick growth, firm and meaty texture which holds well once cooked, and the fact they can be harvested multiple times. They have a delicate flavour with a hint of sweetness and come in several colour varieties. First harvest typically within 7 to 10 days. Merryhill Mushrooms offers oyster kits in several varieties as part of a seasonal range.
Shiitake Mushrooms
Popular in Asian cuisine and known for their rich, smoky flavour and meaty texture. Shiitake mushrooms crop very heavily on the first flush, with one of our indoor shiitake kits yielding approximately 1kg on its first crop. First harvest within 7 to 10 days. If you are looking for quick, heavy results, this is one of the best options. For a process that requires no daily care at all, you can also grow shiitake outdoors with a shiitake outdoor log growing kit.
Lion's Mane Mushrooms
A unique mushroom with a shaggy, white appearance resembling a pom-pom. Lion's Mane has a delicate, seafood-like flavour and a fibrous texture similar to crab or lobster that pulls apart like shredded meat. It is gaining popularity both as a cooking ingredient and for its potential health benefits. Lion's Mane is actually illegal to forage in the UK, so growing it from a kit is the best way to enjoy it fresh. Our air fried Lion's Mane nuggets recipe is one of the most popular ways to cook it.
King Oyster Mushrooms
Different from regular oyster mushrooms, King Oysters produce thick, meaty stems with small caps. The stems are the star and can be sliced into medallions for searing, shredded for "scallop-style" cooking, or roasted whole. A rewarding variety for cooks who want something with real substance on the plate.
Chestnut Mushrooms
A nutty, earthy flavour with a firmer texture than white button mushrooms. Chestnut mushrooms suit everyday cooking and work well in sauces, omelettes, and roasted trays. These kits use a topsoil casing layer and take a little longer (16 to 24 days to first harvest), but the growing guide makes the setup straightforward.
White Button Mushrooms
The most commonly consumed mushroom in the world. Mild flavour, firm texture, and versatile enough for almost any dish. White mushrooms are the same species as chestnut mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) harvested at an earlier stage. A familiar starting point for complete beginners. Same setup and timeline as the chestnut kit (16 to 24 days).
Quick comparison: which kit suits you
| Variety | First harvest | Difficulty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oyster (White, Pink, Yellow) | 7-10 days | Easiest | First-time growers, gifts |
| Shiitake | 7-10 days | Easy | First-time growers, Heavy yields, Asian cooking |
| Lion's Mane | 7-10 days | Easy (different misting) | Meat alternatives, cooks, enthusiasts |
| King Oyster | 7-10 days | Easy | Thick steaks, searing |
| Chestnut / White | 16-24 days | Easy (extra setup step) | Everyday cooking, familiar taste |
If you are not sure where to start, Oyster mushrooms and Shiitake are the most forgiving for first-time growers. Lion's Mane is the most exciting for home cooks. Shiitake gives the heaviest yield. Chestnut and White are the most familiar for everyday meals. There is no wrong choice, every kit in the range is designed to produce results with minimal effort. Mushroom Growing Kit Yields Compared
